同学们备考GRE ， 托福时遇到的拦路虎除了单词和长难句 ， 其实还有短语 ， 尤其是一些“我以为我认识” ， 实际上“并不认识”的短语 。
同学们请看下面这道数学题：

In the figure above, a path from point A to point D is determined by moving upward or to the right along the grid lines. How many different paths can be drawn from A to D that do not include either B or C
?
A. Two
B. Four
C. Six
D. Eight
E. Sixteen
这道题有些同学会错选D ， 原因是将not include either B or C理解成了不包括B或C ， 而实际上not either B or C = neither B nor C =B和C都不包括 ， 所以这道数学题的答案是B 。
同学们接着看下面这道填空题：

这道题中的短语not A or B = not A or not B = neither A nor B 。

这句话中的短语not so much A as B = 不是A而是B 。
因此 ， 这句话的准确理解应该是“地磁罗盘不是告诉小海龟走哪条路而是让它保持航向” 。
