With more domestic employment opportunities and changesin international relations, more professionals, including Chinese students studying abroad and overseas Chinese, are likely to opt for career development in China, says a report released on Oct. 29.
The research paper, titled University Alumni Insights: Chinese Graduate Career Development Prospects 2020, was jointly conducted by LinkedIn China and the Center for China and Globalization (CCG), a Beijing-based think tank.

Using LinkedIn's Economic Graph function, researchers studied the career direction and prospects of over 218,000 graduates between 2014 and 2019 from ten high-profile Chinese universities (U10) included in the country's Double First Class Initiative. The research aims to provide both career suggestions for college graduates and policy reference for China's occupational and industrial development.
The report reveals that 54.9% of U10 graduates with bachelor's degrees chose to pursue further study, meanwhile, over 90% of U10 graduates with master's and doctoral degrees (or above) preferred to work.
Statistics from LinkedIn also show that students increasingly preferred to study abroad. Meanwhile, although over 70% of U10 graduates earned degrees from overseas universities, more than 80% of them chose to return and work in China. The report thus concludes that this is creating a "benign talent circulation trend."
Discussing the advantages of studying abroad, Zhang Ning, deputy secretary-general of the China Scholarship Council, believes that it helps students develop a global perspective, build global competence, gain an improved understanding of science and technology in developed countries, and learn the benefits of diversity courtesy of real-life experience.
The study also notes that due to the uncertainties caused by COVID-19, destinations for studying abroad will likely be more diversified in the future considering changes in visa and migration policies.
In terms of career preference, the report states that U10 graduates with bachelor's and master's degrees are inclined to work in application-oriented sectors such as finance, consumer goods, and media-related industries whereas those with doctoral degrees (or above) prefer to pursue careers in professional fields such as health care and law.
The report also analyzed key skills demonstrated by U10 graduates to better their career development. It found that management skills such as strategic planning and leadership, and data analyzation skills such as Python and Java proficiency, are among the most important abilities to get a leg up on the career ladder. "With the innovation and development of China's digital economy, more industries will have a stronger demand for data R&D," the report says.
According to this year's Report on the Work of the Government, the number of China's college graduates has reached 8.74 million. Hu Jianhua, CCG senior research fellow and a former official with the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee, stressed that universities should provide additional guidance regarding employment for graduates as well as organize more internship programs for students to better prepare them for career life.
