3月11日 ， 美国总统特朗普在白宫就新冠肺炎疫情发表全国电视讲话 ， 宣布已经发布关闭学校的指导意见 ， 并承认新冠肺炎疫情给美国和美国民众带来了“大规模和非常危险的健康威胁” 。 根据约翰?霍普金斯大学统计 ， 目前美国确诊病例已超过1300例 ， 分布在44个州 。

关闭学校是否有助于疫情防控？耶鲁大学社会科学家兼医生尼古拉斯?克里斯塔基斯（NicholasChristakis）认为此举确实有效 。 他表示 ， 关闭学校可将累积感染率降低约25% ， 并将当地疫情高峰推迟约2周 。 这为隔离确诊病例赢得了时间 ， 同时也有助于减轻医疗系统的负担 。
自新冠肺炎在全球大肆蔓延以来 ， 美国多所高校宣布临时关闭课堂 ， 启动在线教育 ， 以应对疫情” 。 据不完全统计 ， 目前全美停课的学校至少有200多所 。 这些学校中有些宣布全面停课 ， 改为线上教学 ， 也有部分学校宣布短期停课 ， 以采取应对举措 。 此外 ， 还有一些学校持“观望”态度 ， 或给出近期停课计划 ， 或根据疫情发展重新评估 ， 再作教学安排 。
