Rebecca & Jane Eyre
Rebecca is a novel written by Daphne du Maurier. Compared with Jane Eyre , this book is more like a complete reversal, telling another possibility of the story. In Jane Eyre , the focus is on the hostess. Although the former lady is alive, she is just an obstacle to overcome. In Rebecca , the focus is on the former lady Rebecca, who is dead but still is a height that can never be crossed.

Outline
The author portrays a nearly perfect female Rebecca. Rebecca no longer exists, but she is everywhere. She can control the people who submit to her and the manor before and after her death. "I" in the novel, as the new heroine of Manderley, who had never received good education, lived in the shadow of Rebecca all the time. It was not until a ship ran aground accidentally that the truth of Rebecca's death was revealed and all doubts and fears in "I" were dispelled. Mrs. Danvers, Rebecca's loyal servant in the world, sent Manderley into the fire in the dark. However, can the fire really bury all the past? Although my husband and I left the mansion forever, the panic in the dream will come back in some unforeseen form.

Extracts
I would sigh a moment, stretch myself and turn, adopt opening my eyes, be bewildered at that glittering sun, that hard, clean sky, so different from the soft moonlight of my dream. The day would lie before us both, long no doubt, and uneventful, but fraught with a certain stillness, a dear tranquility we had not known before. We would not talk of Manderley, I would not tell my dream. For Manderley was ours no longer. Manderley was no more.
