她每早都要喝巧克力 ， 没完没了地要人关心 。 她老抱怨自己神经痛 ， 胸口痛 ， 肝脏也痛 。 脚步声吵得她头疼；当人们离开她的时候孤单折磨她；而人们要是回来了 ， 那一定是来看她死的 。 等到查理晚上回来 ， 她会从被单下伸出两只又长又细的胳膊环在他的脖子上 ， 让他坐在床边 ， 开始对他唠叨自己的烦恼：他忽视了她啦、他爱着别人啦、人家早说过她不会有好结局啦 。 牢骚完了 ， 她总要管他要一剂药 ， 还要他再多爱自己一点点 。

But in the refulgence of the present hour her past life, so distinct until then, faded away completely, and she almost doubted having lived it. She was there; beyond the ball was only shadow overspreading all the rest. She was just eating a maraschinoice that she held with her left hand in a silver-giltcup, her eyes half-closed, and the spoon between her teeth.
客人们涌进了台球室 ， 一个侍者绊到了椅子 ， 打破了窗玻璃 。 玻璃碎裂的当儿包法利夫人正好扭过头去 ， 瞧见花园里的一帮农民把他们的脸紧贴在玻璃上 ， 向屋里张望他们 。 于是拜耳斗的记忆又一次浮现在她眼前 。 她又看见了农场 ， 泥泞的池塘 ， 她父亲身穿宽大的罩衣站在苹果树下 。 她还看见了从前的自己 ， 正在牛奶棚里用手指撇去奶桶表面的乳脂 。 这些过往在此之前还都历历在目 ， 现在却在一片灯火繁华里消失殆尽 ， 让她简直怀疑此前种种是否只是一场梦 。 她站在舞厅里 ， 舞厅之上只有一片阴影 ， 笼罩着其余的一切 。 她正在吃樱桃酒冰激凌 ， 镀金的银杯拿在手里 ， 眼睛半开半闭 ， 匙子衔在牙齿之间 。
