Prompt 1: Did George Floyd’s death change your viewpoint on systemic racism in the United States? If so, explain how and why it changed.(乔治·弗洛伊德之死是否改变了你对于美国的种族歧视的看法?如果是 , 请解释它如何以及为何改变了你的看法 。 )

Some of Us Have Mattered for Too Long
This year has seen – and rightly so – a dramatic rise in the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement. While BLM has been in the public consciousness since 2013 when it was originally founded, unfortunate recent events including the deaths of two black citizens, George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, at the hands of police have catapulted the organization and more generally the slogan to the top of headlines. Not everyone is comfortable with the phrase “Black Lives Matter” though. A sizable percentage of the American population feels like an emphasis on black lives means other lives won’t be treated as important. “Don’t we all matter?” such people ask. “Should we really be saying one group is more important than another, that one racial group’s lives are more important than another?” While such questions seem reasonable – so reasonable that even Hillary Clinton, stumbled when first asked about BLM on the campaign trail in 2015, responding, “I think all lives matter,” – they mask a deep problem and in the end tend to push the importance of racial issues in America back into the shadows. A close look at what the phrase actually means, and why its proponents use it, helps demonstrate that is a necessary corrective to centuries of mistreatment.
