Dear fellow people around the world who support the All Lives Matter movement, when I say I understand you, I do mean it. Ever since the death of George Floyd, the Black Lives Matter movement has been one of the most prevalent topics in the United States and the world. Many of you respond with the notion that “Well actually, all lives matter.”, and I completely agree with you. Let me explain with some simpler examples that convey the same meaning.
When a dad served every member of the family dinner except the youngest who is neglected most of the time, the latter argues that “I should get my fair share”. However, we should argue that “every member should get their fair share”, not only the youngest one, even when the youngest is constantly ignored, starved, and not getting the attention he deserves.
Similarly, when your neighbor’s house is on fire, you should argue that your own intact house should also be sprayed with water by the firefighters, even when it wastes the valuable time of putting down the actual burnt-up neighbor’s house and aggravates the loss of your neighbor. But that should not be a problem, because “all houses matter”.
Returning to the original topic. Black lives matter, but they are not the only lives that matter. “All lives matter” should be the correct expression, and we should not favor any specific race, even when black lives are undervalued, neglected, and discriminated under the notion of “All lives matter”.
My fellow people around the world, if you can understand how preposterous my arguments and examples above are, then you should be able to understand the ridiculousness behind the movement that you support.
All lives do matter, but is it still fair to claim that you support this notion when a particular subset of “all lives” does not seem to matter? Is it fair to neglect the fact that black lives are killed with a disproportionate number? Is it fair to ignore the phenomenon that under the same occasion, black lives are treated much more often with deadly force than white lives? Is it fair to criticize those black people trying to protect their vulnerable lives when your own lives are not? Is it fair to say “All Lives Matter” when what this phrase does is declining the very problems that it is supposed to emphasize?
The phrase “Black Lives Matter” is never about exclusion, but about focus. It does not mean that “only Black Lives Matter”, but “Black Lives Matter, too” or “Black Lives should also Matter” because, in the present context, it seems like people forget this significant subset of “all lives” that is just as righteous to matter as any other lives.
