Origins of American black nationalism

Abstract:As two major trends of thoughts in the history of black Americans，“integrationism”and“black nationalism”have been in an inter-wax-wane relationship based on the racial relations and social conflicts of the American society.The paper aims to trace the origins of American black nationalism to the aftermath of the War of Independence，when the black mass movement characterized by“emigrationism”nurtured American black nationalism and laid a foundation for black nationalist thoughts in the 1920s.This paper reveals its implications for an exploration of the historical development of American black nationalism.
